Pyotra and the Wolf by Elna Holst

Solid writing but I struggled too much with the story

Review of Pyotra and the Wolf by Elna Holst

Pyotra and the Wolf is the first Elna Holst story I couldn’t get a real connection with. Not being a real fan of the whole wolf-shifter genre, I was still hoping there would be enough Holst magic to keep me happy. And I can’t deny the writing was solid (as ever), especially in the first part of the book where the narrative was with Pyotra Nikolayevna Kulakova, the Kulakov family, the small settlement in the Northern part of Siberia, and the Tundra wolf shifter Volk (Evane Khudi).

It had a very Russian feel to it, so that was very well done. But, I stumbled over all the Russian names and diminutives. There were just so many it was hard to keep track of who was who. Pyotra and Volk have a bit of an insta-attraction and when they get it on between the pelts they really manage to melt the permafrost. Woot!

Part 2 was just confusing. We switch scenery and have multiple characters (mostly dudes) having their pov, including the creepy billionaire baddy of the story. I guess I understand why Holst chose to tell it this way, but I wasn’t a fan of it. So, yes, solid writing but I struggled too much with it to make this a five-star adventure.
