Based on the BBC radio programme ‘Desert Island Discs’, we’ve adapted this idea to ask castaways to list up to eight books, one song and one luxury item that they couldn’t do without on a desert island.
The rules are fairly simple, any type of book can be selected, but we ask that at least half are lesfic. Choices should be justified in a paragraph or two. Any type of music is allowed. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.
Other Desert Island Choices
Stacy Lynn Miller's Desert Island Books
My book choices
Alone by EJ Noyes
Genre: F/F Romance
This would be the first book I’d crack open. I’d need to know what to expect from my isolation. And who knows? It might help me conjure up an island-mate.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Genre: Mainstream Dystopian
So many life lessons are encapsulated in this story, and since I’d be on a deserted island, I figure I’d need reminding that true strength comes from within.
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
Genre: Mainstream Dystopian
Besides getting a double dose of survival skills, at some point, I’d need the added lesson of perseverance.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fannie Flagg
Genre: Mainstream Lesbian-Themed Literary Saga
An old favorite, I could enjoy this story as much the hundredth time as I did the first.
Above All, Honor by Radclyffe
Genre: F/F Romantic Action & Adventure
This first book in Rad’s Honor series is the second published lesfic story I ever read. It kicked off my infatuation with action and crime stories. I’m sure reading it over and over again would spawn ideas for more stories of my own.
Astrid Inside/Out by Louise McBain
Genre: F/F Humorous Romance
To keep my spirits up, I’d need lots of laughs wrapped around a good romance. Louise provides both in this upcoming entertaining tale.
Eternal Rocks Beneath by BenMac (a.k.a. Cameron MacElvee)
Genre: F/F Literary Saga
This is an unpublished fan fiction novel in the world of Showtime’s “The L Word.” It’s an emotional, heartbreaking, yet rewarding epic coming of age story of overcoming depression and sexual abuse. Hands down, it’s the best story I’ve ever read. I hope Cameron will publish it in book form one day. It deserves a worldwide audience.
Teach Yourself to Play Guitar by David M. Brewster
Genre: Music Instruction
I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. With endless time on my hands, I’d have no excuse but to master the darn thing.
My song choice
“Just My Imagination” by Gwyneth Paltrow and Babyface
One summer day, three generations of my family piled into my father’s SUV and spent the day at a section of the South Yuba River, picnicking and dabbling in the water. During the drive back, my dad played this song on a loop. On its first playing, my daughter and niece in the back row sang along. On the second, my mother, other daughter, and I in the middle row joined in. By the third round, everyone in the car was singing, glancing at each other, and beaming from ear to ear. It was the ultimate reminder that family was everything. The following year, my father passed away. Now, every time I hear that song, I remember that perfect moment in time when I was never more content. I could listen to it on a loop a hundred million times.
My inanimate object choice
An acoustic guitar
This was the most challenging item to choose, but since I’m slowly losing my central vision due to a rare disease, I decided on something that had the potential of bringing me the most joy without needing to use my eyes. I’d study David Brewster’s guide while I still could, master playing the guitar, and once my sight was gone, I’d sing and strum “Just My Imagination” every day until I was rescued.
About Stacy Lynn Miller
A late bloomer, Stacy took up writing after retiring from the Air Force. Her twenty years of toting a gun and police badge, tinkering with computers, and sleuthing for clues as an investigator form the foundation of her bestselling Manhattan Sloane romantic thriller series. Visually impaired, she is a proud stroke survivor, mother of two, tech nerd, chocolate lover, and terrible golfer with a hole-in-one. When you can’t find her writing, she’ll be golfing or drinking wine (sometimes both) with friends and family in Northern California.
