A Family Affair is a perfect title for Harper Bliss’s new story and in her unique way, Bliss can turn around what should be an impossible situation into a romance like no other author.
Kate suffers greatly from the fact that she and her husband Kevin cannot have children, they had tried everything, including IVF, but it was not to be. This has caused a rift in the relationship that is difficult to repair. Both are grieving big time in different ways. Kevin withdraws completely from Kate and Kate feels totally abandoned and alone on her own, since her husband, whom she needs right now like never before, is neither emotionally nor physically available.
I can’t imagine how desperate Kate must feel in this situation. She is extremely vulnerable and her emotions are all over the place, while her defense mechanism is off. As she spends more and more time with Stella, her sister-in-law, an actress who is on the verge of a breakthrough and whom she had always judged as spoiled and superficial, she has to admit to herself that Stella is a very empathetic and caring person with whom she enjoys spending time. Joking about common celebrity crushes, going to a celebrity party together, relaxing in the jacuzzi, and having a tequila night make Kate forget her whole misery for a while and makes her receptive to unexpected feelings and a surprising attraction.
The story is told alternately from the point of view of Kate and Stella giving us a glimpse into their minds. I liked reading about the arguments and self-criticism of the main characters regarding their situation, their actions, and their feelings. Both women are profound and endearing and I couldn’t help but cheer for them.
Cheating is a hard thing to accept and digest. Kevin is understandably no exception, even if he is partly to blame for the whole situation. In the type of situation Kate is in, I can understand how a flirtation can go too far. How the two of them handle everything afterward is all the more important as cheating for months on end is an absolute no-go. Kate and Stella fight against their feelings, blame themselves, and chew on their own guilt. But we can’t control when and with whom we fall in love. Will the family break up or will time heal the wounds? Read for yourself, A Family Affair is Haper Bliss at her best. This book is emotional, exciting, and filled with hot sex scenes. 4.5 stars.
