Creepier than I expected

This is a book that I have been wanting to read for the past four years, but I always seem to have too many Halloween-type books to choose from and timewise this month always flies by. I finally moved this book to the front of the list and I’m really glad that I did because it was slightly more in the horror vein than just the paranormal vein that I expected. To be clear, I love everything under this spec-fic umbrella when it comes to books, it is just that some of the horror books I have been reading lately have been more gross horror instead of scary horror, so I was excited that this book I expected to be more under just the paranormal tag, had its share of some creepy moments and was better read during the day.

This isn’t all paranormal and horror moments as it does have a romance too. I thought the romance was about average. I liked it but I wasn’t blown away. It added some lightness that the story needed but the lack of communication drove me nuts. The main premise of the book is that Jazz is being attacked by a ghost/demon that follows here wherever she moves and makes her life miserable. There is a big backstory as to why, but you will have to read the book to find out. The woman she falls for, Gypsy, just so happens to be the host of a paranormal show that works with families, that live in houses that are haunted by angry ghosts and gets them help. Obviously, the two of them meeting and having feelings seems like fate but still Jazz is worried to tell Gypsy she has a ghost attached to her since she thinks she either won’t believe her or will run away. Jazz thinking that the host of a ghost show wouldn’t believe her didn’t make logical sense and it all dragged out too long.

I’m not sure what it is but my biggest complaint lately is that I think books could stand to be shorter, and more tightened up. The communication in the romance should have started way earlier, which would have led to Jazz really having to confront her ghost issue sooner. While I did find the ending and how everything played out to be interesting, once the main excitement was over, the book was to. It ended up being abrupt. It was okay for a paranormal or horror book, but it is not the right ending when you make the book into a paranormal romance. Then you really should stretch things out into more of gooey ending. 4 stars.

TLDR: Overall, this had some bumps but was still a solid 4-star spooky mix of paranormal romance with a bit of horror mixed in. This was creepier than I expected and that was a pleasant surprise. The romance was only average, but I didn’t read this book for the romance, so I found I liked it enough that it did its job to give the book a little lightness. I would recommend this to people looking for Halloween reads that are a little more on the creepy side than an average paranormal romance. I would also recommend this to people who enjoy paranormal reality TV shows, although more on the emotional story side and mystical side (there is not much about equipment). October is definitely the perfect time of year for this read.
