Review of ‘Stay for the Holidays’ by Mildred Gail Digby
This was a fun and steamy wlw book. This is the sequel to the book ‘Stay‘. While I didn’t like this as much as ‘Stay’, I’m finding it hard to compare the two since they are pretty different. I was told that this book was going to be steamy, but I didn’t realize that I would probably put the erotic-romance tag on this. Digby sure turned the heat up for this one.
I first want to mention that I would highly recommend reading these books in order. ‘Stay’, is a book that I really enjoyed a year ago last October. It was a book I was looking forward to, but it was even better than I expected. While ‘Stay’ was a favorite of mine, I’ve read maybe 250 books since then and I didn’t realize how much I had forgotten. I remember loving the twist at the end but not remembering what that twist actually was. Then yesterday, I started ‘Stay for the Holidays’ and the book just jumps right into things. Digby, hardly talks about the past and when she does it is little things sprinkled throughout the whole book. There is no catch-up in the beginning and I ended up having trouble remembering things. I wish I would have reread ‘Stay’ so it would have been fresh in my mind.
I mentioned this had a different feel and that this book is much more erotic, we’re talking sex, sex, and even more sex. If you are don’t like reading explicit sex scenes then this book is definitely not for you. I enjoy some good steamy scenes but I must admit I wasn’t crazy about the beginning of the book. There were two sex scenes in just the first 8% of the book. Digby went right for it in the beginning. This is where my problem was because again I was hoping for that little refresher about the characters, who both have huge pasts with major incidences that make them who they are today, so I wanted to be reminded of who they are before the sex started. I also had a hard time picturing a few of the body configurations. Digby was not writing run of the mill WLW sex scenes. She was trying to be different, and spice things up a bit, which worked for most of the book. It was just the first two sex scenes that had a bump or two. The rest read much better for me.
The actual paranormal mystery –Jade and Connie are trying to find out if a resort is haunted- was interesting but not the toughest to figure out. I felt the heart of the book, besides all the steam, was the growth of the characters’ relationship and how they are changing as individuals. I can’t go into details here since it would be too spoilerish for people who have not read ‘Stay’. But, these are very interesting characters with a lot more layers than expected and every time Digby delved a little deeper, especially about Jade, caused me to care more and feel more for them. There were plenty of distractions with all the sex and possible ghosts, but the little character study parts were what I enjoyed the most.
I would recommend this to people looking for an erotic-romance with a little paranormal twist. This book won’t be for everyone but I enjoyed all the steam and had fun with this. I highly recommend reading Stay first. You really need that background to truly understand the characters. ‘Stay’ is a really good book so you won’t be disappointed by starting there. 3.50 Stars.
A copy was given to me for an honest review.
