Desert Island Books

Based on the BBC radio programme ‘Desert Island Discs’, we’ve adapted this idea to ask castaways to list up to eight books, one song and one luxury item that they couldn’t do without on a desert island.

The rules are fairly simple, any type of book can be selected, but we ask that at least half are lesfic. Choices should be justified in a paragraph or two. Any type of music is allowed. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

My book choices

Curious Wine‘ by Katherine Forrest
This classic is a book that belongs on every lesbian bookshelf – even one on a desert island!

In This House of Brede‘ by Rumer Godden
My favorite book by my favorite author. It is a masterpiece of character development, one every writer should study. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read it, but I see something new every time I do.

And Playing the Role of Herself‘ by KE Lane
I was late to reading this, but it really is a fantastic story, very well-written.

When the Stars Sang‘ by Caren Werlinger
Is it weird that I would want a novel I wrote? But it’s set on an island, so I would probably try to make my desert island as much like Little Sister as possible!

Under A Falling Star‘ by Jae
This is a delightful story by a fantastic author. And if I’m still on my island at the holidays, I’d definitely want to be re-reading this gem.

When Women Were Warriors‘ trilogy by Catherine Wilson
I may be cheating here, but I’ll tuck all three books into one volume for an epic story.

Blank book (with pencil)
Is this cheating?

My inanimate object choice

My Leatherman multi-tool, not to help me escape, but to be able to make sparks for a fire and open cocoanuts! I’m no fool. I watched all the trouble Tom Hanks had.

My song choice

‘Shut Up & Dance’ by Walk the Moon. There are so many songs I love, but I can sing most of those to myself. But since I’m all alone on this island, I can dance as badly as I really do and no one will see!
